World Court set to rule on genocide case against Israel filed by South Africa

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) was due to rule on Friday, 26 January, on a case filed by South Africa against Israel  over its offensive against the Palestinian territory of Gaza, which the African nation has alleged amounts to genocide.

The ICJ, sometimes called the World Court, heard from South Africa and Israel as they argued their cases before judges two weeks ago.

The court, based in The Hague, Netherlands, is expected to issue its ruling at 15:00 Mecca Time or 12:00 GMT.

Observers say the court is not expected to rule Israel has committed acts of genocide in Gaza.

It is instead expected to decide whether to order Israel to halt its offensive in Gaza, a measure that South Africa is likely to reject.

According to Al Jazeera, some experts believe one likely scenario is that the court will fall short of ordering a full ceasefire, but could instead order Israel to allow adequate humanitarian aid to enter the besieged Palestinian territory.

The court, whose decisions are final and cannot be appealed against, has no way of enforcing its rulings.

Palestinian armed movement Hamas has been cited by Al Jazeera as saying that it would abide by any ceasefire orders from the ICJ if Israel reciprocates.

The ICJ could also decide that it does not have jurisdiction over the case and choose not to order any interim measures.
