UN says over 500 killed in East Africa floods after heavy rains

Floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains have killed 528 people and displaced 482,320 others across Eastern Africa and continue to cause havoc in the region, the United Nations said on Friday, May 31.

In Kenya, 315 people have been killed, 188 injured and 38 are missing, while more than 306,520 others have been affected by heavy rains and floods since March 1, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in an update.

“In Tanzania, 155 people have lost their lives due to the impact of heavy rains, landslides and flooding while an estimated 126,000 people have been affected by early May, according to authorities,” it added.

Other affected countries include Somalia, where nine people have lost their lives, seven schools damaged and more than 3,000 shelters destroyed across 13 affected districts, the agency said.

The Climate Prediction and Applications Center of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development has warned that the region is expected to receive above-average rainfall between June and September.
