Somalia says 30 militants killed in operation in central region of Galguduud

Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said today, 25 January, that 30 Al Shabaab fighters were killed in an operation by government forces and their “international friends” in the central region of Galguduud.

NISA said on X that 20 other militants were wounded during the operation in Galhareeri district.

The agency did not say when the raid took place or which foreign forces were involved.

It said those killed included top Al Shabaab commanders and foreign nationalists.

The operation appeared to have been a retaliation for an Al Shabab attack on a military base in the neighboring region of Mudug on January 24 that reportedly left many government soldiers dead.

Somalia plunged into instability in the early 1990s and the government there has has been fighting Al Shabab, which has not commented on the latest operation against it, for close to two decades.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared an “all-out war” on the group in 2022 following his election.
