Eritrea stops massive cyber attack on anniversary of independence

Eritrean authorities have foiled a massive cyber attack that coincided with the country’s 33rd anniversary of independence, the government said in a statement on Sunday, May 26.

The attack was detected by “the defensive countermeasures deployed promptly” and the country’s internet network continued its functions without interruptions, the statement said.

“A massive cyber attack was unleashed against Eritrea’s Internet System on Independence Day, Friday, 24 May 2024, at 12:32’:47 in the afternoon hours,” the statement added.

“The attempt was foiled by the defensive countermeasures deployed promptly, and the network continued its functions without interruptions,” it said.

The government said it will reveal the “identity of the originators, architects, and implementers of the attempted cyber attack”, which said it was “not alien to the watchful eyes of the Eritrean government”.

“The whole episode will be divulged in due time,” it said.

A cyber attack is any intentional effort to steal, expose, alter, disable, or destroy data, applications, or other assets through unauthorized access to a network, computer system or digital device.
