American military personnel killed in Jordan: US

Three US service personnel were killed and dozens wounded on Sunday, January 28, in a drone attack on a military outpost in north-east Jordan, America’s president said.

The attack took place in an area known as Tower 22, near Jordan’s border with Syria.

US president Joe Biden said the attack was carried out by “radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq”.

He vowed that the US government would “hold all those responsible to account at a time and in a manner of our choosing”.

Iran has denied involvement in the attack, saying Biden’s claims were “baseless”.

Jordan called it a “terrorist attack” and pledged to “continue confronting the risk of terrorism and drug and weapons smuggling across the Syrian border into Jordan”.

The drone assault marked the first loss of American life in the Middle East since the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza began in October 2023.
